Applications are invited for this PhD studentship in the aspect-oriented
software engineering group in the Computing Department at Lancaster
University. The Computing Department is a leading research centre with a
major international reputation for its work on experimental and
systems-oriented computer science. It was awarded grade 5 in the 2001
national assessment of research in UK universities. The department offers a
highly collegiate and stimulating environment with around 30 faculty, 53
researchers and a team of technical and administrative support staff
(including research support). We also have a very large PhD programme with
over 100 participants, and hold approximately £10m in research funding from
a diverse range of sources including from EPSRC and EU sponsored research
projects and direct from industry. The department is housed in InfoLab21, a
state-of-the-art building dedicated to world class research and technology
transfer in ICT (http://infolab21.lancs.ac.uk/).

The Department has an international reputation for its research in
aspect-oriented software engineering. We are at the forefront of several key
research areas such as Early Aspects: aspect-oriented requirements
engineering and architecture design, metrics-based evaluation of
aspect-oriented systems, aspect-oriented middleware, aspect-oriented
databases and aspect variability for product line engineering. We also lead
the European Commission funded European Network of Excellence on
Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD-Europe) and are actively involved
in organisation of international events on the topic including the
Aspect-Oriented Software Development Conference that we successfully hosted
in 2004.

This studentship is to be funded through the European Commission Framework 6
project on Aspect-Oriented, Model-Driven Product Line Engineering (AMPLE).
The project is being coordinated by Lancaster University. The focus of the
project is on combining aspect-oriented and model-driven techniques to
address variability at each stage in a software product line engineering
lifecycle and bind the variation points in various development stages and
dimensions into a coherent variability framework across the life cycle. The
specific focus of the studentship is on developing support for backward and
forward traceability in the aspect-oriented, model-driven product line
engineering approach.

The successful candidate must have a BSc or MSc in Computer Science (or a
related discipline). S/he must possess knowledge of aspect-oriented software
development and modelling or model-driven development. Above all, s/he will
possess initiative, motivation and an ability to produce deliverables in a
timely fashion as well as work as part of a team.

The successful candidate will join an ambitious research group with a strong
track record in aspect-oriented software engineering. We would expect the
successful candidate to focus his/her research interests accordingly, and
contribute to the dynamic and internationally respected research environment
in the Department. S/he will also be required to interact with project
partners across Europe and travel to meetings in Europe on a regular basis.
S/he will also be expected to attend relevant conferences and workshops,
both nationally and internationally, to promote the outcomes of the project.
The studentship is for 36 months and covers tuition fees at the home/EU rate
in addition to providing a maintenance grant of a minimum of £12300 per
year. This is subject to satisfactory performance of the person as well as
successful continuation of the project.
Suitable candidates are encouraged to make informal enquires to Dr. Awais
Rashid (awais at comp.lancs.ac.uk) and visit the Aspect-Oriented Software
Engineering pages at Lancaster University:
http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/computing/aose/.

To apply, please send the following documents by email to Sarah Brown
(sarah at comp.lancs.ac.uk):
- CV
- 1 page statement of research interests
- application form (a word document can be downloaded from:
http://www.lancs.ac.uk/users/admissions/postgrad/pgform1.htm
(NB. In Box 14: state “Ample studentship”).
If you have already applied to undertake a PhD at Lancaster University and
fulfil the person specifications you may like to be considered for the Ample
studentship. If so, please email Sarah Brown and she can make a note on
your application.

Closing date for applications: 31 July 2006

Expected start date for studentship: 01 October 2006
