@ AOSD 2008
Seventh International Conference on Aspect-Oriented Software Development
http://www.aosd.net/2008/
Brussels, Belgium
March 31st - April 4th, 2008
Overview
--------
Practical middleware platforms nowadays are highly complex. This
complexity surfaces internally in middleware construction, and
externally in the programming models supported and features/services
offered. There is a need to reduce this complexity both internally and
externally: internally through enhanced modularity, and externally
through the use of contemporary composition paradigms. Furthermore,
middleware platforms need to be configurable, reconfigurable,
customisable and extensible to reflect the specific needs of
applications, the heterogeneity of involved systems and the multiple
distributed deployment contexts.
Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD) has been put forward as a
promising and successful paradigm to improve the reusability,
extensibility, modularity and customization capabilities of middleware
platforms. Moreover, most non-trivial applications of AO have emerged
from the middleware domain, also a number of AO-frameworks (e.g. JBoss
and Spring ) specifically target the AO-middleware application domain.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together and extend the AOSD and
middleware research communities. This hybrid AO-middleware community
is a cross-fertilization of 1) the AOSD community which has a plethora
of promising technologies for further research on middleware
development and middleware application composition. In addition to 2)
the middleware community which has challenging applications for the
validation and enhancement of AO-technologies.
Submission
----------
Possible topics include (but not limited to):
* Techniques for the development of middleware platforms and services.
* Fundamentals of AO middleware.
* AO-middleware and component technology.
* AO-middleware and security.
* Distributed aspects.
* Aspects and Grid middleware
* Techniques to manage middleware complexity.
* Applications and middleware service composition approaches.
* Interaction issues in middleware.
* Dynamic AOP for adaptive behavior in middleware platforms.
* Domain specific languages in a middleware context.
* Experience reports on using AO in middleware (particularly
industrial experience).
* Evaluation/comparison of middleware performance or application
development
The primary goal of this workshop is to bring together and extend the
research communities on AOSD and middleware. By hosting this workshop
we hope to solicit experience reports, particularly from industrial
organizations, that will hopefully highlight both the positive and
negative impact from deploying AO middleware solutions. By sharing
such experiences will enable a debate to be opened regarding the open
issues that are still to be addressed by both the AO and middleware
communities. From this we can stimulate innovative ideas and solutions
to these outstanding issues and so take AO-middleware to its next
stage of evolution.
Furthermore, these discussions between the AO and middleware
communities will hopefully lead to a better understanding of
requirements, concepts and techniques of both domains. This will then
create an impetus for new and novel applications for AO compositions
and real examples of AO being applied in practice
Papers must be written in English and please see the workshop website
http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/computing/naomi08/ for submission instructions.
The following types of papers are accepted:
- Full papers: Up to 6 pages in length.
- Position papers: Up to 2 pages in length.
The AOSD conference workshop chairs are negotiating to publish the
proceedings in the ACM digital library, which will require workshop
papers to adopt the common ACM SIGPLAN format. Papers of a high standard
will
be invited to submit an extended version to a Special Issue of the
Transactions on AOSD journal.
All accepted papers will be published on the website
http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/computing/naomi08/ prior to the workshop.
Workshop Format
---------------
During the morning session a presentation from a prominent keynote
speaker from industry will be given. This will be followed by a series
of short presentations (up to 15 minutes) of selected papers. For
other accepted papers, a poster session will be arranged during the
workshop breaks to enable discussion between workshop attendees. The
rest of the workshop will be devoted to discussions and work in small
interest groups. Results of the group work will be presented and
debated at a concluding panel (with participation of invited
panellists). The results of the interest group and panel discussions
will be summarised into the workshop report.
Important Dates
---------------
* The submission deadline is 18th January, 2008, 23:59 Samoan time.
* The notification is expected to be approximately 8th February,
2008.
* Submission deadline for camera-ready papers : 1st March, 2008
* Workshop date: 31st March, 2008 or 1st April, 2008
- Dates are still to be decided by the AOSD workshop chair
- Final date will be announced on the NAOMI website.
