It might be worth looking at the work going in the SOA/WS arena. There is 
work going on to try and ensure that the plethora of WS-* standards 
(WS-Security, WS-Addressing, WS-Coordination, WS-AtomicTransaction, 
WS-BusinessActivity, WS-Reliable Messaging) can be composed. This seems to 
me a similar problem to the one you are addressing.
