The ICSE — the International Conference on Software Engineering — is an annual conference devoted to software engineering. It is one of the largest gatherings in the discipline, bringing together experts and stakeholders from across the industry. The Computing Research and Education Association of Australasia rates the conference with an A rating; the Ministry of Education in Brazil goes further, rating it A+. As one of the most recognised software conferences anywhere, it also holds the highest rating from Microsoft Academic. For the annual event that it is, the pioneering edition was held back in 1975 in the United States of America — specifically in Washington, DC.

Barry W. Boehm
Conference chair · TRW Professor of Software Engineering, USCHeld in Los Angeles in the United States, the 21st International Conference on Software Engineering saw the coming together of great minds in the software engineering field. Under the chairmanship of Barry Boehm of the University of Southern California, the conference gave participants a wonderful time to interact, share ideas, and take part in workshops and seminars exposing new ways of doing things in the software development world.
02The Proceedings
The sessions of the conference saw top experts delivering keynote addresses and lectures. Some of the highlights of the proceedings were:
- Using off-the-shelf middleware to implement connectors in distributed software architectures — delivered by Eric Dashofy, Richard Taylor, and Nenad Medvidovic.
- Exploring ADLs to specify architectural styles induced by middleware infrastructures — a wonderful session by David Rosenblum and Elisabetta Di Nitto.
It was Jean-Marc DeBaud and Klaus Schmid's turn to take the audience through a systematic approach to software development — with the paper "A systematic approach to derive the scope of software product lines."
Once again the trio of Nenad Medvidovic, Richard Taylor, and David Rosenblum came up on stage — this time to highlight language evolution and architecture in software development, in "A Language and Environment for Architecture-based Software Development and Evolution."
Other notable sessions of the 1999 International Conference on Software Engineering offered richly interactive formats: a workshop on web engineering, a workshop on software engineering over the internet, and the "First workshop on economic-driven software engineering research," among others.
In one line: the 21st International Conference on Software Engineering saw many speakers and experts take the stage to enlighten participants on new developments — and on improvements to existing software development practices.
